Adoption of Hybrid maize in Zambia: effects on gender roles, food consumption, and nutrition AgEcon

Enhanced agriculture productivity in sub-Saharan Africa is critical to promote economic growth and poverty alleviation and to avoid increasing food scarcities in the region. The impact of commercialization and intensification of agriculture on the well- being of the rural poor depends on how they are carried out. Past research by IFPRI and collaborating institutions on commercialization of small- scale farming in about a dozen countries provided new knowledge about the relationships between commercialization and rural well- being as measured by incomes, consumption, and nutrition. On the strength of expounding the general situation of study area and the status quo of agricultural laborers in China, the changes of the scale and structure of them from 1985 to 2009 are analyzed by relying on the survey from farmers and statistical data from the government. The causes of these changes are analyzed from the aspects of rural farmland policy,birth-control policy, farmland marginalization and industrialization. Based on the study on the causes, the impacts of the changes on food production are analyzed from operation scale of household, the grain cropping area, the multi-cropping index and land productivity. Yet relatively little is known about the income and nutritional effects of increasing commercial Agriculture. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar cuáles son las formas principales de migración de los jornaleros del municipio de Tlapa de Comonfort a los lugares de recepción, además de establecer las condiciones de la migración y estancia, y determinar cómo la comunidad migrante valora el Programa de Atención a Jornaleros Agrícolas. Modernization of traditional agriculture entalls increased participation of the smallholder sector in the exchange economy. The achievement of this participation requires an open trade regime, domestic policies that ensure against market failures and public policy that effectively permits use of a new production technology for sustained growth.
